[Q-ID0793] How should the Tarawih and Eid prayers be prayed if we are still in lockdown due to COVID19?

0 1

Feeding the poor and needy is an act that draws us closer to Allah. We earn His forgiveness, mercies and blessings through this act of charity.

“Anyone who looks after and works for a widow and a poor person is like a warrior fighting for Allah?s cause, or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all night. (Bukhari)

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: if the lockdown was to continue in England due to the coronavirus, how will we pray the Tarāweeh and ‘Eid prayers?

Questioner: Shahzad from Birmingham UK

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

It should be noted that it is not necessary to pray tarāweeh in congregation (jamā’ah) and neither is it necessary to pray it in the mosque, in addition, it is not even necessary to stand behind a Hafiz and listen to the Quran in its entirety, i.e. the prayer will still be valid. Rather, to pray in jamā’ah is better, and to listen to the Quran is sunnah, therefore, if it is not possible to establish the tarāweeh jamā’ah in the mosques, then it should be prayed individually at home. Just as we are praying the other prayers at home nowadays, similarly, the tarāweeh prayer should be performed like this, and by doing this, the complete reward of tarāweeh can still be attained.

On the other hand, it necessary for there to be a jamā’ah for the eid prayer, therefore, all efforts should be made to establish the jamā’ah for eid; if this is not possible, then four cycles of chaasht prayer should be offered in its place, in the homes, as stated in al-Durr al-Mukhtār.
